Heated Debate on the Protection of French – May 9, 2024
Liberal MP Francis Drouin formally apologized on Thursday for rude remarks he made on Monday during a meeting of the Standing Committee on Official Languages, when confronted by two witnesses campaigning for the protection of French in Quebec. Both the Opposition in the House of Commons and members of the Quebec government decried these remarks. The Bloc Québécois continues to call for Francis Drouin's resignation as President of the Assemblée parlementaire de la Francophonie. Despite the apology, this set off a heated debate between the Liberals and the Bloc on the promotion of French. Our host Catherine Lafrance reports with La Presse's Parliamentary Bureau Chief, Joël-Denis Bellavance. Hydro-Québec and the Legault government are turning on the charm with the Innu: Quebec ministers and Hydro-Québec CEO Michael Sabia visited Unamen Shipu earlier this week to apologize for failing to consult them in the past on the Lac-Robertson hydroelectric project. 32 million will be paid over 23 years to the community of Unamen Shipu as a gesture of economic reconciliation. All this is happening against the backdrop of Hydro-Québec's plans to double its production by 2050. The Crown corporation is keen to capitalize on dams installed on traditional Innu territory. Hundreds of refugee sponsorship applications could be rejected by Quebec's Ministère de l'Immigration, de la Francisation et de l'Intégration. The Quebec government has decided to tighten its regulations and no longer accept security deposits from future sponsors to prevent fraud. However, several concerned organizations have denounced the decision, arguing that they have always dealt with such cases in this way, as Radio-Canada reported earlier this week. Catherine Lafrance discusses the possible consequences of this initiative with Alessandra Santopadre, who runs the sponsorship program for the Diocese of Montreal.

Quebec Bridge, Liberal MP's Committee Comments – May 9, 2024
Procurement Minister Jean-Yves Duclos, Transport Minister Pablo Rodriguez, Conservative MP Pierre Paul-Hus, and Bloc Québécois MP Caroline Desbiens discuss the federal government's agreement to buy back the Quebec Bridge from the Canadian National Railway (CN). Linking Quebec City and Lévis, the historic bridge was privatized in 1993 and has been owned by CN since 1995. Federal Govt Appoints Lise Maisonneuve to Lead Safe Sport Commission
In Ottawa, Carla Qualtrough, the minister of sport and physical activity, announces the appointment of former Ontario chief justice Lise Maisonneuve to lead the Future of Sport in Canada Commission. Minister Qualtrough also announces the appointment of special advisers Noni Classen and Andrew Pipe to support the commissioner’s work. The commission was announced by the federal government in December 2023 following committee testimony by several athletes on the physical, mental and sexual abuse they experienced in organized sports. Athletes, advocates and MPs have called for the government to hold a public inquiry into abuse in sports. (May 9, 2024)

Federal Ministers Provide Update on Upcoming Wildfire Season – May 9, 2024
Federal ministers hold a news conference on Parliament Hill to provide an update on the forecast for the upcoming 2024 wildfire season. Federal officials have previously warned Canadians to expect another severe wildfire season following 2023, which was the worst one on record. Current areas of concern include the interior of British Columbia, northeastern B.C., northern Alberta and southern North West Territories. Speaking with reporters are Harjit Sajjan (emergency preparedness), Steven Guilbeault (environment and climate change) and Jonathan Wilkinson (energy and natural resources) as well as Sherry Romanado (minister Sajjan's parliamentary secretary). Minister Sajjan highlights a new initiative aimed at strengthening Canada's emergency response capacity by ensuring NGOs can mobilize rapidly and deploy responders and relief supplies.
